Sigma 300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM – The Ultimate telephoto zoom

Recently I was looking at bird photographs posted on Birdphotographers.net and saw a really beautiful image of two crowned cranes in a courtship dance. (click here to see the photo)

As usual, I looked at the technical info to see what lens the photographer had been using and was very surprised to see that it was a Sigma 300mm-800mm zoom lens.

Now this is not a lens you see everyday out on safari so I did a bit of digging to see what I could find out.

It turns out that this is quite a fearsome beast, nicknamed (apparently) the Sigmonster, and that it is something of a legend.

If you have the odd £5,000 to spend and you don’t mind lugging an additional 12lbs/5.5kg (double that with the essential tripod and head, this is not a lens you’ll be hand holding) around with you then it could be just what you need to get you nice and close to birds of any size.

If you do decide that this is just the lens you’ve been looking for and rush out to buy one, can I please borrow it?
